Wolvix

About

From the Wolvix homepage:
"Wolvix is a LiveDistro build from SLAX . It's a desktop and multimedia oriented Linux distribution designed to suite the needs of regular to advanced desktop users. Wolvix comes with the Xfce desktop environment and the Fluxbox window manager and includes a carefully selected group of development, graphics, multimedia, network and office applications."
Using a "one application per need" philosophy, Wolvix is a generally lightweight LiveDistro; especially when compared others such as Knoppix. Wolvix also comes in two flavors: Cub and Hunter. Both offer a wide variety of applications that suite a wide array of situations. With the ability to be booted off of a 512MB USB thumb drive, Wolvix prides itself on its usability combined with its small size.

Cub
According to the Wolvix website:
"Cub is a small(ish) version of Wolvix. It's designed to fit on 256MB USB Flash Drives and to serve as a base for building your own custom Wolvix version. Don't let the size of Cub fool you, it packs most of the software you'd expect to see in a full blown desktop OS. It features a carefully selected group of development, graphics, multimedia, network and office applications. Wolvix Cub comes with both the Xfce desktop environment and the Fluxbox window manager."
The base Wolvix version, Cub is the smaller of the two versions and the preferred version for those who like to customize their distribution to a great extent. Even with a smaller variety of applications than its larger sibling Hunter, Cub manages to maintain a great amount of usability as a rescue disk or general use disk in its default form.

Hunter
According to the Wolvix website:
"Hunter is the large 'standard' version of Wolvix, it's designed to fit on 512MB USB Flash Drives and use Wolvix Cub as it's base. It includes more applications, a lot of games and larger packages like Samba, Java and libraries for printer support which it's younger brother Cub doesn't have. Wolvix Hunter is desktop and multimedia oriented operating system for everyday computing tasks , fun and entertainment. It comes with both the Xfce desktop environment and the Fluxbox window manager."
Hunter is based off of Cub and includes a larger array of applications than its smaller sibling. Meant more for desktop replacement or general desktop use than Cub, Hunter retains its ability to be installed onto a 512MB USB thumb drive despite its increase in size.

Advantages

With its small size allowing it to fit on a 512MB USB thumb drive, Wolvix is not only a lightweight distribution, but also a very portable one. Not having to rely on a full CD or DVD for transportation and use, it can be transported in a wider variety of mediums more safely. Since it is based off of the SLAX distribution, Wolvix naturally retains the ability to customize your version through the use of modules. This ability allows for an even greater variety of usage and the ability for Wolvix to suit a greater amount of people's needs.
