mounting from usb-stick if mounting from usb-stick does not work
Most Notebooks and some older computers did not let me mount from usb-stick, whatever i configure in the bios-setup. Configure the boot order so that the computer boot first from CD-ROM, and after that from the harddisk. Now booting from USB-Stick is possible, but a special Boot-CD-ROM is needed:
The
SLAX Boot CD v 5.1.8 from
http://www.slax.org/download.php∞ must be downloaded and burned as an image (Burn CD-Image). Plug your wolvix-usb-stick into the computer, insert the CD-ROM and hit the Reset-button (or turn power off and on). A "Slax" boot message will appear with the green slax logo. You can enter cheatcodes or just press Enter. As soon as you see the wolvix text prompt (where you log in as "root"), you can remove the CD-ROM. Now you can continue to boot from your USB-Stick and have a free CD-ROM drive.
Running Wolvix from ISO:
Additions:
You can terminate the entire X server (the graphical environment) and get back to the command line with the key combination:
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace. Be careful though, this will terminate all running x-applications and you will loose your unsaved work.
Copy one of the Wolvix ISO files to your hard drive, preferably the root of the drive and give it a short name like cub.iso or hunter.iso. Then boot Wolvix from the CD in your CD/DVD-ROM drive with like this:
wolvix from=/dev/hdxy/name_of_file.iso where 'hdxy' is your drive+partition and 'name_of_file.iso' is the name you gave the ISO file.
- You need to boot Wolvix from a CD first to get the system started, but once you issued the cheatcode the system doesn't need the CD anymore.

Example: I place a copy of Wolvix Hunter ISO on my third partition on my only hard drive and rename it to hunter.iso.
I can then Boot Wolvix with this cheatcode:
wolvix from=/dev/hda3/hunter.iso. Once Wolvix is loaded you can remove the CD from your CD/DVD-ROM drive since Wolvix will be running from the ISO on the hard drive.

Killing a misbehaving x-application:
You can kill/terminate an x-application that's frozen and refuse close. Issue the command: xkill and left click on the application you wish to terminate. Be careful not to accidentally click the desktop. If you don't want to terminate anything, right click anywhere to make the "kill cursor" go away.
Killing the X server:
You can terminate the entire X server (the graphical environment) and get back to the command line with the key combination: Ctrl+Alt+Backspace. Be careful though, this will terminate all running x-applications and you will loose your unsaved work.
